Samsung’s solid-state drives (SSDs) are available in both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors, with the 3.5-inch model costing an extra $30. We received the 2.5-inch model for testing, and had no trouble sliding it into our Gateway notebook for testing.
Though its sequential read performance of 80.6MB/s is the lowest we’ve seen so far in an SSD, it’s about twice as fast as the performance you’d see with a typical 5,400rpm notebook drive. And the Samsung still performed quite well in our tests.
It returned an impressive boot time of just 32 seconds on a clean installation of Windows XP Professional. Compared to other drives we’ve reviewed, its 10GB read time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds is definitely on the slow side, but its 10GB write time of 7 minutes is in line with other units.
In our real-world application loading tests using Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office 2007, the Samsung took just 2 seconds to load the former and 12 seconds to open the latter. These times are consistent with what we’ve seen on other drives, with the exception of the MTRON Pro 3.5 64GB SATA II SSD and the MTRON Mobi 64GB SATA SSD, both of which opened Photoshop is just 4 seconds.
